A
commonly held belief with HVAC systems is that the filters you
change regularly on your Central Heat and Air unit
are there to protect you from breathing polluted air. Not so.
The most common filters do not do anything to protect or ensure
better indoor air quality, but rather are there to protect the
components of the machinery.
A popular survey conducted by the EPA(Environmental Protection
Agency) even shows that as much as 45% of commercial buildings
that use air handlers were using the wrong filters, or the wrong
sized filters. With statistics like this it’s not surprising
that Indoor Air Pollution has risen so significantly as a national
health threat.
As much as two out of three indoor air quality problems involve
the HVAC system in our homes, schools, and business.
The same HVAC system that distributes conditioned air throughout
a building can also distribute indoor air pollutants throughout
a building.
Bacteria and Mold species can get into a building through the
air intake system and find their way into the HVAC system, where
they can grow in damp or wet places, such as cooling coils,
humidifiers, condensation drip pans, and filters, and then serve
as a continued source of contamination throughout the building.
The air handler can also take pollution from one portion of
the building and redistribute it to other areas the building.
Poorly configured and poorly maintained HVAC systems compounded
with the sheer numbers of Commercial buildings and homes brings
the threat of Indoor Air Pollution Sickness to an All Time High.
Poor Indoor Air Quality has been proven to be at the source
or the trigger to many illnesses including allergies, asthma,
immune system deficiencies, legionelosis, pontiac fever, tuberculosis,
histoplasmosis, aspergillosis, and influenza.
